Many people come to Thailand to visit the great beaches, go diving, hiking, or check out what Bangkok City has to offer. Right away you notice there are many other kinds of bars go-go type bars Thailand is famous for and many tourists are not aware of all the great Live Music in Thailand and that is available in most cities and towns all over the country. There are many Expats living in Thailand so there is also quite a large community of Western style bars and pubs that offer some great live music.

What kind of Music to Look For

There are Blues, Jazz, Rock, Pop, Thai, Folk, Easy Listening, Funk, Country, and live music shows were you can even catch an Elvis impersonator if you're into that. Of course if you are in Bangkok as it is a huge International city you are going to have more choices for different clubs and variety of music but there are still some great places to check out in cities like Pattaya, Chiang Mai, and towns in Phuket, and Koh Samui. They are all the major tourists' areas so you still get a good cross section of music, usually more in their high seasons when places can afford to pay the musician, which varies from place to place.

The Musicians

The quality of music and bands vary depending on the style of music. There are many musicians that come and go pasting through while on vacation or they come each year to live during the winter months of their countries and end up jamming or gigging while they are here, so if you get lucky you can unexpectedly catch and hear some great players in a little club in some smaller places like Chaing Mai or Koh Samui. There are local Thai traditional musicians to check out and many Thai cover bands doing mostly pop rock. There are also quite a few bands from the Philippines that play mostly American Top 40 covers as well as Jazz in some resorts and bars. Solo artists or duo's are common as a lot of places are not that big. You don't see many musicians busting on the street like in North America and Europe as it is frowned upon as it is consider a form of begging, instead there are many festivals at the local temples and there is always a live band performing.

The Places to Find Live Music

The best is to check the Internet listings for live shows especially in Bangkok as there are so much live music to see but the problem there is trying to find the place. Doing a search also works in some smaller areas but they tend not to change the listings on their sites and sometimes the club or bar does not even exist anymore or the band information is from a few years ago. For these types of smaller towns you would be better to check out information on the local forums or blogs on the net for that particular area, and of course word of mouth through other folks of the places you are staying at or meet in your travels. Pattaya City would be the second largest place after Bangkok for good live music in Thailand as it is only a short 3 or so hour drive and a lot of musicians can get there easy. There are also some local magazines but a lot are also out of date but a good reference point and the larger clubs are usually still there. Up in Chiang Mai in the North there are some real cool clubs near the river, again just search "goggle" for that and as I mentioned above local festivals and resorts in all areas.

By far the most popular dramatic form is likay, a burlesque of lakorn containing elements of pantomime, comic folk opera and social satire. Generally performed against a simply-painted backdrop during temple fairs, likay commonly presents court-derived stories and embellishes them with local references and anecdotes.

Players, garishly costumed in satins, sequins and feathered headgear, andro-gynously made up with powder, rouge and mascara, rely heavily on pratfalls, jarring musical accompaniment and bawdy lyrics. Spontaneous dialogue is freighted with outrageous puns and double entendres. Interaction between characters keeps audiences awake and laughing until the early hours.

Two neglected dramatic forms are nang yai shadow play and hoon marionettes, both regular entertainment in 17th century Ayutthaya. In nang yai, which predates khon and lakorn, intricately fashioned cowhide figures, some two metres tall, are held against a brilliantly backlit white screen. Bearers of the figures dance their parts; their movements were later to provide the pattern for khon and lakorn. The effect resembles a high contrast, black and white television set viewed inside a dark room. Animated silhouettes, the figure-bearing men's gestures and dancing combine with music and singing to bring the spectacle to life.

The nang talung, a more popular shadow play found mainly in the south of Thailand, closely resembles the Indonesian wayang. Beautifully fashioned nang talung figures are smaller than their nang yai counterparts and are often constructed to have one movable part - an arm, a leg, a chin or genitals. Concealed from audien-ces, nang talung manipulators are skilled singers and comedians whose brilliant repar-tee keeps action bubbling.

Hoon (marionettes) are seldom seen. Superbly crafted figures, they differed from European marionettes in that they were manipulated by concealed threads pulled from below, not above. Hoon plays were from the classical repertoire which did nothing to enhance their popularity. A more popular version is hoon krabok (literally 'cylindrical model') which are essentially similar to Punch and Judy-style hand puppets.

Music Indian, Chinese and Khmer musical traditions were major (as Burmese, Malayan and Javanese were minor) influences in forming Thai classical music. For the most part, Thai music evolved by simplifying its diverse influences rather than embellishing them, and over 600 years of experimentation slowly developed into an integrated, unique system. Some traditional Thai instruments are of Chinese origin, others Indian. Bas reliefs at Angkor Wat show hand cymbals and one-stringed, plucked zithers strikingly similar to certain Thai instruments played today.

Music was important to Ayutthayan courts as an adjunct to ceremonial, official and social functions. Contemporary book illustrations depict classical string and percussion ensembles. A 1688 account of Ayutthayan music by Nicholas Gervaise is one of the first European references to Thai music: 'We heard concerts of a vocal and instrumental nature. The most pleasing of these instruments is somewhat similar to that we hear from two violins playing in perfect harmony. But there is nothing more disagreeable than the small edition of this instrument - a kind of violin with three brass wires. Their copper trumpets resemble in sound the comets our peasants use to call their cattle. Their flutes are scarcely any softer ... bronze gongs which distress those not accustomed to the sound ...'

Some of the biggest bands in the world now recognise the importance of exposure at some of Europe's biggest music festivals. Glastonbury now showcases almost 400 live performances for audiences in excess of 150,000 people. Other huge music festivals include the UK's V Festivals, the Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals in Germany that attract as many visitors as Glastonbury and the world's largest music festival, the Donauinselfest in Vienna that this year had a programme of over 2000 different performers and yet still didn't charge any admission fee.
At the other end of the spectrum, there are many other outdoors festivals in different parts of Europe, particularly in holiday destinations, that are well worth visiting. Here are just a few that took place this year that may be worth considering as part of next year's holiday plans.

Each year on the Algarve coast of Portugal the motor racing circuit near Portimao hosts the Rock One festival, which this year take place in early August. This new motor circuit is a few miles outside Portimao and is great venue for many events in addition to it's top quality motorsport races. This year Rock One ran over 4 days and include appearances from acts such as James Morrison, James and Linkin Park. More than 200,000 people were expected to attend.

Another big festival taking place in August was the Spirit of Bourgas held in the Bulgarian holiday town of Bourgas. This a relatively new festival, held for only the second time in 2009, but this year's event included some big name acts and is sure to continue going from strength to strength.

On the island of Tenerife a one day festival during July combines music with a conservation theme. The Tenerife Eolica Festival takes place at the Institute of Renewable Energy on the island and also includes dance and theatrical events as well as workshops.

Jazz music also features prominently in music events this summer, with many including artists visiting Europe from north and south America. Palma Jazz held in Mallorca is a series of individual concerts based in Mallorca's capital city. Palma already has several thriving jazz clubs, which host some of the performances, but by far the most impressive venue during the festival is the city's Bellver Castle, which sits high above the city and is just a breathtaking location for a music event. Acts in previous years have included Gloria Gaynor and Diana Krall.

In different countries on different dates the festivals that fall under the World of Music, Arts and Dance or WOMAD banner include festivals as far apart as Adelaide in Australia, Abu Dhabi, the tower of London, Sicily and Gran Canaria. This year's WOMAD Gran Canaria moves from its traditional May date and will take place between 12th and 15th November, when the weather will still be warm and rain-free in this favourite winter sun destination. The acts expecting to be on stage at these free concerts in the Parque de Santa Catalinain, a town square in La Palmas, Gran Canaria's main town, include performers from all over the world, although the organisers are yet to release final details of the line up.

One of the smallest, yet sophisticated music events in Europe must surely be the short series of Chopin piano recitals that take place every year in the breathtakingly beautiful town of Valldemossa on the island of Mallorca. The composer lived and worked in the monastery in Valldemossa for a short period of his life and the annual festival celebrates his work with a series of four evening concerts during August.

Finally, the small town of Lindos on the island of Rhodes, holds an annual tribute band festival during the month of June. This is a unique and unusual festival that lasts for a week and this year included groups paying homage to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Thin Lizzy.

Website owners and internet users have joined forces in claiming that they should have access to this content- while the music industry is holding fast to their copyrights.

The Debate: Should Lyrics and Tablature Be Publicly Available?

Depending on whom you ask the answer to the lyrics debate will be different. The music industry claims their copyrighted material is being violated. The industry claims that those who buy music in stores will have access to the lyrics, so there is no need for them to be publicly available. As for tablature rights, the industry claims that tablature books have lost sales due to the surge in publicly shared tabs.

But where does the digital music downloads fit in? If a user downloads a single song, shouldn't they be entitled to the lyrics? In this instance, the publicly available lyrics are helping the consumer, and in no way harming the music industry. Sadly, many music services don't offer lyrics with downloads- which has led to the creation of services such as pearLyrics.

A cease and desist letter was sent to the creator of pearLyrics, which functions to find lyrics based on tracks playing in iTunes. The creator, Walter Ritter, was forced to remove his freeware module. The module in question grabbed the lyrics from public domains on the internet- meaning the module in question wasn't exactly illegal. Nevertheless, the music industry shut it down without hesitation.

Loopholes to the Lyric Dilemma

Despite the massive amount of cease and desist letters handed out, we all know that there are hundreds of sources to find lyrics online. This is largely due in part to the fact that many countries outside the United States do not pursue the supposed violators. The result: many lyrics websites are being outsourced to foreign countries.

If the lyrics website in question is hosted in the United States, there is a good chance the music industry has its eye on it. Nevertheless, many US-based lyrics sites have survived and continue to grow. Some lyric sites attempt to barter with the music industry or artists- while others are simply offering lyrics to public domain music.

The Future of Lyric Resources

Lyric resources are here to stay for now. Much like the VCR had caused turmoil among the film industry- the internet is just a new method to simplify life, regardless of what the industry tries to hold onto. We see the VCR as a household item- in time we will most likely see the same outcome with lyrics and the internet.

Logically, the music industry can't keep up with every lyric website that springs up. Trying to shutdown foreign websites has also become quite a problem for the music industry. Instead of raising controversy, perhaps a more sensible solution should be called for. Compromises will have to be made- and several lyrics websites have already begun attempted negations with the music industry.

It will be interesting to see how the debate develops as time moves on. As for the rest of us, we can still enjoy the freedom to enjoy lyrics to our favorite songs; it doesn't look like this fact will change anytime in the near future.

Contemporary Arabic Music And Pre Western Middle Eastern Music

Traditional Middle Eastern rhythms covered a wide array of odd time signatures. However, as a result of Western musics influence, a large portion of contemporary Middle Eastern music is composed in duple or other meters containing even numbers. Thus, the first two following drum set patterns are written in 4/4. Their overall sound and rhythm serve as accurate examples of traditional Middle Eastern music adapted for the drum set. Like the 5/4 time signature, 7/4 meter is relatively easy to count. It's normal to count a song in 7/4 in one of three ways: 1) count all seven beats per measure; 2) count a measure of 4/4 followed by a measure of 3/4; 3) count a measure of 3/4 followed by a measure of 4/4.

Probably the most famous rock song written in 7/4 is Pink Floyd's "Money". As with other styles, there are countless variations and embellished drum grooves to play in 7/4. The tempo range is similar to that of 5/4, with quarter note equal from one hundred to one hundred and thirty two beats per minute. The 5/8 meter is often more difficult to feel than 5/4 or 7/4 because its normally played at a faster tempo. One practical way of counting this meter is to sound out all five eighth notes per measure. However, due to its faster tempo, it may be more practical to break down the meter into two separate groupings, either a 3 plus 2 grouping or a 2 plus 3 grouping. The pulse of 5/8 meter is often brisk, with eighth note equal from one hundred and ninety two to three hundred and twenty beats per minute.

The music of the Middle East and the Arabic nations dates back thousands of years, and has influenced countless other musical traditions. Contemporary Middle Eastern music combines the traits of traditional Eastern folk music with popular music of the Western hemisphere, including elements of classical music. Ghazal, Qawali, Maghrebi, Kahleeji and Arabic Pop are just a few of the numerous styles of music emanating from Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the Persian Gulf in the musics early modern forms, Middle Eastern composers integrated their folk styles with Western influenced orchestras, though currently the trend has turned back toward smaller ensembles. Pre Western Middle Eastern music utilized smaller ensembles.

The Arabic nations music along with Middle East music dates back thousands of years, and has influenced countless other musical styles during its evolution. Instruments such as the Oud - a pear shaped stringed instrument, Persian Tars - a plucked and strummed instrument, similar to an Oud, with a sound board of stretched skin rather than wood, Neys - wind instrument, Qanouns - horizontal instrument with many strings, resembling a dulcimer and Kamenches and Rebabas - both fiddle like, bowed instruments, still characterize this musical genre. Notable Arabic musicians include Kazem el Saher, Nawal el Zoughbi, Najwa Karam, Assi el Hillani, George Wassouf, and Amro Diab. Middle Eastern rhythms were originally devised in antiquity on frame drums, the Arabic tabla, the dumbek, the darabuka, finger cymbals, and other traditional percussion instruments. Though an authentic Middle Edstern ensemble still contains such instruments, the drum set is often used in modern day Middle Eastern ensembles.

Eminent composers of the madrigalian period offered an example to the world as writers of madrigals and Church music and were also distinguished as writers of instrumental music.

With the death of Orlando Gibbons (1625) the Madrigalian period may be said to draw towards a close. Gibbons was the last of the writers of the â€œgreatâ€ period, and after his death music began to decline in those departments in which it had hitherto been finest, and to display energy in new directions.

In its way the country was as musical as ever; but the impulse of the Elizabethan age had spent itself, most of its masters were dead, the others were old men. The day of the great Elizabethans was gone. As can readily be imagined, music and musicians received little or no countenance from the Puritans; for though Cromwell himself and a few others were fond of music, the great body of the Puritans regarded it at best with grave suspicion, and music lovers had to exercise a certain discretion in the pursuit of their favourite art.

By an Act of Parliament of the year 1643, the cathedral service had been declared abolished throughout the country; organs were pulled down, choirs disbanded, and such Church music as could be seized, destroyed.

Public musical performances were also interdicted, but beyond this, of course, legal enactment could scarcely go ; so that, Puritan disapproval notwithstanding, music was still very widely cultivated, albeit it had to be kept behind closed doors, as it were, and even then managed, as has already been said, with a certain discretion. The effects of legislation of this kind were, however, apart from the loss of many musical treasures, more apparent than real, and when the restriction was removed, music returned to its old position in the national life again, changed, it is true, but rather from natural causes than political ones.

Music has always played a major part of my life, as from the earliest age I can remember classical music constantly playing in our home. Dad had a lot of 78s and an electric player which required frequent needle changes. In fact I used to watch him change them religiously every eight plays ï¿½ï¿½" not something he would let anyone else do!!

As children, we used to give singing recitals - especially at Christmas times!! I am grateful for the exposure our parents gave us to music ï¿½ï¿½" even if dad was a bit single minded when, in the late 50â€™s my brother Kenneth, bought home a recording of a new rock-n-roll singer called Buddy Holly I think dad thought it was not proper music and that the record couldnâ€™t possibly be up to the same standard as his Beethoven or Mozart recordings!!

He used to have constant discussions with Kenneth about playing them on hisâ€™ radiogram. And as for the Beatles and Rolling Stones records I wanted to play a few years later ï¿½ï¿½" no comment!!

Both my two brothers were taught to play classical music on the piano by our Aunty Win. For myself; it was 1962 and I was far too interested in my Uncle Frankâ€™s brand new MGB roadster to concentrate ï¿½ï¿½" try as my mum did to encourage me!!

My eldest brother, Robert, turned out to be a highly accomplished musician ï¿½ï¿½" playing the French horn professionally for many years. Kenneth, my other brother, in later years, would get all his beer bought for him in the NAFFI bar, bashing out songs when we had a session ï¿½ï¿½" mind you he always had a bad head the next day!

After I left home and joined the British Armed Forces, I have to say my mates were not too happy about Grieg being played in the barrack room. Same problem as my dad had ï¿½ï¿½" different music. So I had to use earphones to listen to him. Mozartâ€™s Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra No1 in F Minor, Op 73 My favourite recording of this outstanding piece: (only one of several!) Deutshe Grammophon 136550 SLPEM (stereo - 1968) Karl Leister, Clarinet, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Rafael Kubelik.

I bought this recording whilst stationed in Germany in 1970 ï¿½ï¿½" since then I have obtained other fine recordings of the Concerto, but I find Karl Leisterâ€™s interpretation of the Adagio(in particular) perfectly captures Mozartâ€™s objective of writing the most profoundly expressive movement for a solo instrument.

The reign of Henry VIII (1509-1547), was a much more eventful one, so far as music is concerned, than that of his father. A younger son, Henry was originally intended for a Churchman, and during the lifetime of his elder brother Arthur, his education was shaped towards this end.

When, through the death of his brother, therefore, he became direct heir to the throne, he was one of the most accomplished young princes in Europe. Among other studies, music had received a large share of his attention; and when he became king he possessed much more than the average Churchman's knowledge of music, and this at a time when musical art and science were still almost completely in the hands of the clergy.

Henry did much for the diffusion of music through the force of his own example. A practical musician, he delighted greatly in part-singing; and as nothing is more influential than a royal example. It was not long before the musician king's court was very nearly as musical as himself, and the ability to sing his part at sight came to be regarded as one of the essential accomplishments of a gentleman, a state of things which had not yet become entirely obsolete two centuries later.

Besides Dr. Fayrfax, who must be reckoned as belonging to the reign of Henry VIII quite as much as to that of his father, there remain to be mentioned three other musicians, whose names stand out more prominently than those of their contemporaries. These are John Taverner, John Merbecke (1523-1591), and Christopher Tye. All composers and organists.

Taverner appears to have been a celebrated composer in his day. He was organist of Boston, in Lincolnshire, and in later years held the same post at Christ Church, Oxford. At Oxford he was for some time in a position of considerable peril through his support of the reformed doctrines.

Christopher Tye was Music Master to Edward VI, and probably to the other children of Henry VIII. He was one of the foremost writers of Church music of his time.

Merbecke's claim to remembrance lies in the fact of his being the first to frame a musical setting of the Book of Common Prayer (1550).

Various circumstances contributed to make the transition from Catholicism to Protestantism a gradual and moderate one. Circumstances which were nowhere happier in their influence than in the case of music, inasmuch as they rendered the retention of a great part of the office of the ancient Church possible. The Reformed ritual being thus not so much a new one as a continuous development of the old.

Chief among the writers, who in their work bridged over the gulf between the old ritual and the new (Thomas Tallis (1520-1585), and his pupil William Byrd (1538-1623), hold unquestioned rank. These names carry us from the time of Henry VIII, through the reigns of Edward VI, and Mary, to that of Elizabeth, and the commencement of the most brilliant period in English musical history.

Learning to record music is not something that you can learn on a whim and will take hard work but in the end it is fun to be able to record your own music.

This doesn't mean that you have to join a school for recording music and spending thousands of dollars, just a program that will show you step-by-step the proper things that you need to be learning and practicing that will benefit you the most.

As you will find there are times that will be difficult and awkward learning the proper way to record music as there are many things need to know. When you start recording, it wonâ€™t be the cleanest sounding track that you have heard but with practice you will get better. The more you practice and use repetition the faster it will come so you can be on your way to recording like a pro.

Against all conventional wisdom, some of the biggest and most critically respected bands bit the hand that fed them for so many years. Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails (really just Trent Reznor) jumped ship, leaving the labels that released landmark albums like OK Computer and The Downward Spiral.

Even to a layperson, you can see that this is serious business, probably the most radical artistic upheaval our generation will experience. We aren't going to get to watch the rise of rock and roll, or hip hop coming out of the inner cities, but we are going to be able to witness first hand what happens when artists have the chance to be autonomous. The lunatics are taking over the asylum. Thom Yorke (of Radiohead) will have a more interesting business strategy then some uptight guy with an MBA that these artists used to have to pitch to just so they could get payola money for radio play.

Radiohead was the first band to really test the waters of what could be done free from the shackles of a major label. They released their latest album "In Rainbows" online and allowed fans to choose how much they think the music is worth. Think about that for a minute...it doesn't take long for a practical mind to come up with the million problems that this can cause for the business. What is profound about this is that Radiohead had enough faith in humanity to believe that people would actually choose to pay for something they could easily download for free; and everyone always takes Thom Yorke for a cynic. It's safe to assume that the labels didn't see this coming; they figured the bottom line to be cash.

The Radiohead experiment seems to have worked. Although they didn't make as much money as they probably would have releasing In Rainbows traditionally, they still made much more then most music journalists and industry people anticipated. People actually paid money, some paying more than the CD would have cost at a record store, to receive a product that was essentially free. People willingly made a donation to artists simply because they enjoyed their art.

The idea of people paying for music when they don't have to isn't revolutionary by itself, but removing the middle man is. The traditional wisdom is that a band needs a label to book tours and most importantly to market albums and shows through radio station payola and other media like magazine ads. The internet has not only allowed bands to release their music directly to their fans, but also to be directly involved with the marketing process. With the popularity of social networking sites like MySpace, bands are going straight to the fans, posting tours dates and even releasing exclusive songs. Tim Armstrong of the mid-90s punk band "Rancid" released an entire album for free on his website in 2006. After the initial popularity of his solo album, judged by the amount of downloads, he released it independently on his record label. "A Poet's Life" went on to be a moderate success in Armstrong's genre. People bought a CD full of music that they probably already had for free on their computer hard drives. This marketing strategy shows that fans are willing to support their favorite artists if the artists release quality music, and not just contract-quota filling albums for their labels.

Advancements in technology and the realization of the opportunities that the internet offers to musicians is a major threat to the labels that isn't going away. As more and more artists see the potential of being completely free of money-hungry management, it is a safe assumption that the quality of music being produced will rise. Bands will be judged solely on the quality of their music and tours instead of Billboard sales numbers. The fans will have the final say in the fate of bands, and many established acts are buying into this. "Queens of the Stone Age" will be the next band to leave their label, Interscope, according to front man and founder Josh Homme. They aren't the first to do it, but here's to hoping they aren't the last.

Brad Paisley Mud On The Tires Contemporary Country Music CD Review by Lee Dennis

Mud On The Tires is the latest release from Contemporary Country Sensation Brad Paisley, and is another winner from this talented musician.

Unfortunately, it's not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can't force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Mud On The Tires. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Mud On The Tires has a nicely varied, mix of 16 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly talented artist. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are him own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions like love, heartbreak, pain, failed relationships and unattainable romance. They're all here.

Overall Mud On The Tires is an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up and is most definitely a worthy addition to any Contemporary Country collection. Truly an outstanding Contemporary Country CD. One of those that is completely void of any wasted time, as each track is simply superb.

While this entire CD is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 1 - Mud On The Tires, track 8 - Hold Me In Your Arms, and track 16 - Farther Along.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 6 - Somebody Knows You Now. It's a great track!

The Art of Jazz dance is an amalgamation of different styles of dance that began between 1800's, and the middle of the 1900's rooted in African American movement. One man known for this type of dance was the star of vaudeville Joe Frisco around 1910 who danced in a unrestrained fashion in close vicinity to the ground while tossing his cigar, and derby in a juggling manner. The Jazz dance style up to the middle of 1950's was Tap dance which was always performed with Jazz music such as the Jitterbug, Swing, Boogie Woogie, Lindy Hop, and the Charleston. Katherine Dunham is renowned choreographer and dancer studied the cultural dances of Caribbean in Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad, Tobago, Martinique and Shango making this African American dance a modern work of pure art.

America who also gained their freedom from Europe joined showed their patriarchy by listening to the Jazz music on records and on the radio to encourage their fellow Americans to believe in their country, and the freedom it stands for. Stalin forbid the playing of Jazz music at the end of the 1945 war throughout the Soviet Union, and banned the use of saxophones. Jazz was called "the music of blacks by Hitler as a reason for the prohibition of Jazz music. Nevertheless, Jazz music was embraced by all who heard it around the globe.

Hello my friends, we need to talk about things that touch the human soul. Music is what I know about and that's what we will mainly talk about, yet there are the arts, painting sculpting, poetry, and more. Music is what I know so that is what I want to focus on.

Back in time not long ago Music was what we were all about. Writing, playing, living, was all about our human existence. We listened with our minds, hearts, and souls to help us understand what the meaning of life was, and to open our minds to what we did not understand all to become better people. We did become better. More understanding, more knowledgeable, more open to what we did not understand, and more true to ourselves and others, with a gracious nature. In 2007 we have definitely lost what we have learned before. For some reason it has not been passed down. The youth today are beginning to search it out. They do see a lifetime of music that taught all to come together and understand, even though they were unsure as to what they were learning. They knew it touched the soul. You will either get what I am saying or not. I hope you do.

I ask the youth of today to pick up a guitar, a bass guitar, drums, a piano, a clarinet, a tuba, a saxophone, any musical instrument and learn to play it. Let it touch you, maybe you'll change instruments, or add more! Please I ask you to keep the MUSIC ALIVE! It has been around since the beginning of time and it is being put aside for cheap entertainment. Learning, practicing, developing something from nothing is the great challenge of the human existence. Let's not lose it!

Please pick up an instrument and do the best you can. Music does equal brain power and I have worked with VH-1 and Save the Music, and it is true. You can be in a symphony a rock band, any type band, or in your basement, you do not have to do it for any reason but enjoyment. If you don't enjoy it you are not going to make it anyway. That is the 1st phase, enjoyment. If you want to go for your dreams be great, I did, but phase one is enjoyment of playing...! If you don't have that play sports or motocross, or whatever makes you happy. I just don't want us to lose the music. Anything someone is passionate about, I am for, whatever it is. I am a musician though, so I see that artistry!

Jazz music composition is the work of knowledgeable musicians with the skills to write, and create one of the most memorable masterpieces. At that time most of the youth in that 20�s wherein a mood to spend money without any aim and most of them kept a passion for music and dancing. As a youth you are preparing to have a relaxing time keeping behind the week of work behind you and also the stresses of life you pretend to be a prince of the European country clad in the finest suits available and following and equivalent dress code. You take almost an hour to set your hair right and you Jung in to the Chevy Nova owned by you and you go to pick up your girl friend. These kind of carefree youth and dare devils with no care attitude were common in the 1960�s but this attitude came to an end by the end of the said decade. There was a vast change in the style of cloths. The suits became more formal and got to be stitched to suit the size of the person. The hair style also changed with more contemporary looks and permanent curls. As in every other field, music also underwent a radical change. Like the group, the fans were also of different tastes and culture. Roxy music came in to existence in 1972. Their sound was known as avant � garde. Roxy music soon conquered Brittan and the whole of Europe. They had a strong fan following in South America also. This music band became a hit in the United States when they performed a John Lennon song.

Roxy music had mostly youth as their fans who went on to create a separate culture known as British Punk movement in the end of 1970 and in the beginning of 1980. You cannot however blame Roxy music entirely for this. If you can not recollect any of the songs of Roxy music, just listen to the punk based modern alternative rock and the top 40. Check out the websites that I point out but make sure to read my description of what I like or dislike about that particular one. Also make sure to check out some actually pretty good paid sites that have almost EVERY single song you can think of at your fingertips at a pretty reasonable price. My recommendation is that you use the other sites that I mention for free sheet music after this one before even considering this site. It does have a lot of information and sites to go to but the headache it can cause probably will not benefit you.

This is the second entry in my Google search for free sheet music. Well boys and girls, this website actually DOES have free sheet music that you can download.

A couple of the great features are that it actually breaks down the different instruments that have sheet music (guitar, piano, etc), and it has lists that can be sorted by style, your experience level, artist and popularity.

A few things that I do see wrong with this site however is that it is a site that only gives you a taste for what they have to offer as of free sheet music. Most free sheet music songs are classical and not too popular â€œpopularâ€ songs. Their selection is not the widest in the world. The reason for this is that they want you to become a member of their site for a low yearly rate of $20. This isnâ€™t a bad price for a year, but if you are looking for free sheet music, this isnâ€™t your site.

This would be the third entry on Google. This site I wonâ€™t spend much time at because they are basically a website of links. Sheet Music Archive also has free sheet music for your viewing pleasure. And this is a great site if you are looking for classical pieces to play. However for someone looking for a little bit more modern pieces, you really wonâ€™t find much on this site.

That is my list of the tops sites for â€œfree sheet music guideâ€. There are 9 million sites that are just like these. Some might offer a little more, some might offer a little less, but they are all basically the same.

My suggestion to everyone reading is to do what I do when I am looking for sheet music. Pick a pay site and stick with it. Not only do pay sites have everything that you could want, any artist you could ever want, they also have easy to use websites that use the money that you give them monthly or yearly or per sheet as a way to better your experience through their site.

Music lovers can avail of two new models of mobile phones unveiled by Nokia. They offer excellent music player services and connectivity features. They also offer high end multi-media features, though they differ in design and approach.

The two new music player phones launched by Nokia are the Nokia 5310 Xpress Music and the Nokia 5610 Xpress Music. The Nokia 5310 Xpress Music mobile phone has a slim candy-bar design and is available in two colors: blue or red. Although Nokia did not jump into the fray for creating slimmer phones, this phone is also quite trim. Its extremely compact profile and sleek design makes it portable and easy to handle. It is 103 mm tall, 9.9 mm thick and 44mm wide. It weighs just 70 grams.

It is observed that the Nokia 5310 Xpress Music in spite of being thin has space for a 3.5 mm headphone jack and proper music control buttons on its left side. The other features of the phone are a 2 mega pixel camera, full Bluetooth with a stereo effect. It also includes an FM radio and comes with a micro SD card slot for holding cards of storage space of up to 4 GB. Apart from these, the Nokia 5310 Xpress Music also has a speaker phone, and applications relating to messaging and organizing. It comes in two tri band versions, one for North America and the other for Europe.

The Nokia 5610 Xpress Music is a little different than the 5310.the Nokia 5610 Xpress Music is slider hand set, also available in red or blue. The Top 8 Things the Music, Television, Movie and Consumer Electronics Industries Should Do by Scott Consolatti

The music, television, movie and consumer electronics industries (hereafter collectively referred to as the industry) have been struggling with the rapid advance of technology and the new virtuality of content. Here are the top eight things the industry should do to harness the technology and recapture the simple tenet of giving the customer what they want.

1. Offer three consumption models.

a. Offer all content free with ads.

All content should be available on demand all the time free with ads. The best examples of this so far are music videos at mtv.com and music.yahoo.com and TV shows at in2tv.aol.com. The worst examples of this are the television networks who still insist on having their content time expire after only a short period of availability. Networks should use the ad model to make their entire catalog of shows, current and past, available for free all the time. All media stores, such as iTunes, should also introduce the option of listening to or watching a brief ad per 10 minutes of content or so in order to enjoy the entire content rather than just short preview clips.

b. Rent all content without ads for a fee.

This is the same as 1a only without the ads for a fee. The best examples of this so far are Netflix and Yahoo! Music Unlimited. With the former, for as low as $8.99 per month, you can rent any movie in the store, and that now includes some that can be watched directly online. With the latter, for as low as $5.99 per month, you can listen to every song in the store as many times as you want with no ads. All media stores and sites should offer this option.

c. Sell all content Digital Rights Management(DRM, or copy protection)-free.

There will still always be a market for owning content outright, such as for those times where you just don't have an Internet connection or don't want to be tethered to a server. In these cases, for both online virtual formats and offline physical formats, DRM simply should go. It has proven to hamper sales significantly due to treating everyday paying customers as if they are pirates, restricting them to play back the content on too few devices, giving them the chore of backing up and managing licenses on their computer and violating their fair use rights. DRM will always be defeatable and the industry simply needs to stop investing an inordinate amount of time and money into something that has a negative impact on their bottom line. The industry should abandon it and get back to the basic premise of allowing the customer the joy of experiencing the content they paid for without any strings attached. The best example of this so far is EMI which is now allowing media stores to sell DRM-free songs.

2. Wireless Internet-enable all devices.

The computer cannot be the only access point. TVs, cable boxes, disc players, DVRs, game consoles, portables, boom boxes, phones, car head units - in short all playback devices - should come with built-in wireless connection to the Internet for access to content servers. The best examples of this so far are the Playstation 3 and the iPhone/iPod touch Wi-Fi Music Store.

3. End format wars.

When a new format is needed to advance the industry to the next level, there should be one and only one format that goes to market and becomes the standard. Like 1c, this applies to both online virtual formats and offline physical formats.

The current example in physical formats is Blu-ray vs. HD DVD. Two formats were necessary at first to spur competition, but the differences between them at this point are so negligible that ultimately one has to win for either to succeed. A standards body needs to exist to allow competition at first and to oversee a limited beta period to ensure customer opinions are factored in, but then to ultimately pick a winner before full-scale market launch. Companies should be required to register candidate formats in the early stages. The standards body should track investment and invention level of each candidate along the way. Then a winner should be chosen with a percentage of the licensing revenue going to all of the candidates commensurate with their investment and invention level. The candidates either agree to these terms from the get-go or they do not participate in determining and profiting from the next generation format.

The current example in virtual formats is mp3 vs. AAC vs. WMA vs. yet others for audio, and mpeg-4 (H.264) vs. WMV (VC-1) vs. yet others for video. Coupled with 1c, the industry should have standardized on mp3 and mpeg-4 a long time ago to ensure that all content will be universally playable on every device.

Correcting this immediately is essential. The industry should get a standards body in place as soon as possible and declare much overdue industry standards, such as Blu-ray, mp3 and mpeg-4. The marketplace will rejoice, sales will skyrocket and the floodgates will open on the dam the industry itself has been one of the largest contributors to building.

4. Allow playlists to be defined and stored on the servers.

What 1a and 1b do is move us away from the need to store and manage our own copies of the content on our client devices (or on our shelves). Moving playlists off of the clients is a natural extension of that. When we can dial up all content including our favorite playlists on demand all the time anywhere we have an Internet connection, the convenience of not having to permanently store and backup our own copies of the data will start to prevail. The best example of this so far is Yahoo! Music Jukebox.

5. Offer movies by the chapter in addition to whole.

Just as the norm is now to be able to buy individual songs rather than just whole albums, the same option should be available for buying the individual chapters of movies. Doing so would offer the same advantages as individual song sales - the ability to collect favorite chapters at lower cost and storage use, the ability to direct-access chapters on playback and the ability to arrange favorite chapters from various movies into playlists. Note that this would require players to pre-cache the next chapter to ensure gapless chapter-to-chapter playback, but that is certainly doable.

6. Offer a choice of bitrates.

Highly compressed bitrates were fine at first, but there is no doubt that even with today's bandwidth and storage (which will only grow with time), those who want to enjoy higher bitrates should have the option. With 1a and 1b, bandwidth is the primary factor, and clearly higher bitrates are possible even today. With 1c online formats, storage is also a factor, but even with today's capacities some may choose quality over quantity for must-have content.

7. Piggyback audio on video for physical formats.

The industry moving to a new physical format is a big undertaking. Assuming a new HD format succeeds for video, then audio should just piggyback on that success. The video format will obviously have enough capacity for audio, and consumers will not have to buy additional players. Previous HD audio attempts of DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD failed for several reasons - separate audio-only players, no single digital connection such as HDMI, format war, etc. - all of which can be avoided once either Blu-ray or HD DVD is declared the standard. Albums in uncompressed PCM, both 2-channel stereo and multi-channel surround, with HD extras such as music videos, live concert footage and still photos all played through an existing player with single HDMI connection would be very compelling. With lossless compression such as Dolby TrueHD, perhaps entire album box sets could fit on one disc. These are exciting new possibilities.

8. Leverage viral marketing.

This is an extension of 1a. Provide url-addressability to free ad-coupled content that sites anywhere can provide links to - it essentially equates to free marketing for you. It doesn't matter from where the eyeballs found the content, just that they found it. More eyeballs means more ad revenue in your pocket and more exposure that will lead to the eventual purchase of the content and related merchandise such as concert tickets, t-shirts, posters, action figures, toys, etc. A free ad-supported lure has always been necessary (radio and TV) for widespread exposure. The best examples of this so far are music videos at mtv.com and music.yahoo.com and TV shows at in2tv.aol.com. Music, movies and all TV programs should get on board and realize the massive new source of constant ad revenue never before possible without the new technology.

These eight things would take the industry out of its current slump and carry it into unprecedented growth territory.

Known as music-optimized cell phones, these gadgets are serious music players. Some have miniature hard drives that can hold all kinds of songs as many as the iPod mini. Others have removable storage cards. It just makes sense, after all. No one wants to carry around two devices if they don't have to.

Hard drives, which make possible the storage of thousands of songs, are expensive, as are removable storage cards. But the price of hardware tends to fall quickly. Over time, music-optimized phones could become as common and affordable as today's camera phones.

Optimized music phones have created a whole new category. They're very good music players that also happen to make phone calls. It's the device formerly known as the cell phone. Some people might drop an audio player for a converged device, but most of the opportunity is for new customers, people who have never owned an MP3 player.

The first cell phone, introduced in 1983, was a massive device that weighed 2 pounds and cost nearly four grand! Music for health again! Just to share with you that how significant is music to your health. Like it or not, we have heard in many occasions (included in my previous post, I said that) that music is good for relaxing your mind. Music can decrease anxiety levels, lower blood pressure and heart rate, and change stress hormone levels. It affects your respiration, reduces muscle tension, increases endorphin levels, and boosts your immune system. The effect of music is so powerful, hospitals around the world use music to reduce stress in patients waiting for surgery.

Now there's fresh evidence on the power of music to affect our health. Researchers from a University in Italy found out something that no one had expected to find. Dr. Bernardi and his colleagues were interested in using music to reduce stress in medical patients. In their experiment, the doctors recorded the vital signs of 24 test volunteers (12 musicians and 12 non-musicians) for 5 minutes. Then the volunteers listened to 6 different styles of music in random order. Random two-minute pauses were inserted in each piece of music. The study found out that fast tempos increased heart rate, blood pressure and respiration and slow tempos reduced them as expected. The style of music and the volunteers' personal taste in music had not had any significant impact at all. It didn't matter what kind of music it was, be it classical or rap. The only thing that mattered was the tempo i.e. fast or slow. This means that the music you hear, whether you like it or not, is going to affect your health.

The Italians further discovered that the silent pauses between musical selections, the test subjects' vital signs returned to normal, in some cases stabilizing at healthier levels than before the music. The researchers say this suggests that listening to any kind of music--fast or slow--could benefit your heart. A well done "Italian job".

I'm going to share with you how do I put music on my PSP and making it my universal digital walkman. It is a very simple procedure to put any of your favorite music into PSP. Before we begin discussing how to download or transfer music on to the PSP, we must understand that PSP do not accept all forms or formats of music file. Depending on the version of firmware your PSP is loaded. Early version of PSP firmware can only playback mp3 music format and it does not support playback of WMA and WMV audio files, making it less appreciable. However much later, firmware of PSP is able to playback WMA and WMV audio files. To do that on any early version, the PSP firmware needs to be upgraded to playback WMA and WMV audio files directly from PSP. MySpace has built a multi-billion dollar network on the backs of up-and-coming acts and unsigned bands and their friends. Myspace and sites like this have exposed many people to new and unheard music and continue to do so at an astonishing rate each day. As a band or act it is now seen as a smart business move and cool to be associated with a brand or land a sync-license in a TV show or commercial. This twenty years before was a direct threat to your artistic vision and classified as “selling out”. But now these things are all used to innovatively expose music to the masses and making it easier to discover it.

Technology has created mega-channels of distribution. Peer-to-peer networks have opened the floodgates to obtaining free music. Furthermore, because digitized music takes of bytes instead of floor space you are now given a wider range of music to choose from at digital retailers. Conversely, the relaxation music you use should be composed in a way that makes it easy to listen to and moderately upbeat. It shouldn't just be background music; it should also catch your attention and the focus of your mind.

There is no specific requirement for a location to enjoy relaxing music. However, you will feel more comfortable physiologically if you are at your own premises, in a darkened room, with some aroma from the burning of therapy oil. Make sure the music volume is not too loud; the sound level should be just nice to overwhelm the external noise. In this respect, a headphone can be very useful. Most importantly, you have to feel comfortable.

But one must bear in mind that relaxation is not something that comes naturally to many of us. Pressure in life means that we are robotically finish our office work and go home, then start to worry about tomorrow. This causes anxiety and hence lack of sleep in many cases. Susan Werner The Gospel Truth Gospel Music CD Review by Clyde Dennis

The Gospel Truth is the latest Gospel CD released by the richly talented Susan Werner who once again has delivered a brilliant collection of tracks. I'm confident Susan Werner fans, and Gospel fans alike will be pleased with this one.

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

The Gospel Truth has a pleasantly varied, mix of 12 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly talented artist. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are her own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions like love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.

I give The Gospel Truth my highest recommendation. It just plain belongs in any serious music collectors collection regardless of genre preference.

While the entire album is outstanding some of my favorites are track 2 - Help Somebody, track 4 - Did Trouble Me, and track 9 - I Will Have A Portion

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 10 - Probably Not. Great track!

There have been some changes in the laws in Canada concerning music and its download in the recent years. Let us look at some of the important aspects that have been affecting the music industry. Some of the aspects of music concerning taxes, charges and the like deserve a closer look.

There is much talk that peer-to-peer is music download is responsible for declining music sales. While there may be some amount of truth to the statement, a large part of the decibels raised may well be due to good old plain rhetoric. Industry numbers suggest that the popularity of latest gizmos like DVDs, retail chain distribution changes, and reduced prices of CDs in the retail market all have been playing their own role in the so-called woes. The woes themselves may not be entirely true themselves, as the music industry has seen fair amount of growth in recent years.

It can also be said with reasonable surety that Canadian artists' royalty losses have been offset by the private copying levy system. The Canadian Private Copying Collective alone has collected millions of dollars over the past few years with much of that revenue earmarked for Canadian artists.

Laws that require people to pay for simple music software goodies like the popular iTunes have the potential of nipping a nascent industry in the bud. Whereas Apple iTunes may well be able to survive the pressure by using its deep pockets, smaller players may not be so lucky. Copyright rules require music download industry to submit more than 40% of their revenue to the collectives.

Incredible as it may seem, even the 40% of gross revenues as envisioned by these tariffs may not cover all the rights that are associated with commercial music download services. It remains well within the realm of possibility that other groups, including collectives representing music performers and producers, may come forward to demand their piece of the cake by further cutting into online music services' revenues.

The well established players have settlements that have been well negotiated to their advantage with the record labels, it is the development of a viable economic model that the future growth of the industry depends on. The much maligned peer to peer downloads are actually already subject to a fair amount of compensation through the levy on private copying. The actual threat lies elsewhere - the collectives that essentially are poised to capture a very large share of the tiny market.

Other innovative areas which the tariff lovers are tapping include the webcasters and online games industry. Others have been eyeing the multi-million online sharing music industry. As much as 25% of revenues, however, continue to come from the online websites that offer music sharing with free music software. The reproduction rights over online music are also being targeted to generate additional revenue in this vast field. Audio webcast sites that feature content similar to conventional radio stations, as well as from established radio stations that webcast their signal also well in the line of fire. Of course, there are different rates of taxes for different online services - varying from five percent to as high as twenty-five percent.

Music is an art form consisting of sound and silence expressed through time. Elements of sound as used in music are pitch (including melody and harmony), rhythm (including tempo and meter), and sonic qualities of timbre, articulation, dynamics, and texture.

The creation, performance, significance and even the definition of music, varies according to culture and social context. Music ranges from strictly organized compositions and performances to improvisational or aleatoric forms. For purposes of discussion and exploration of the topic, music is divided into genres and sub-genres, although the dividing lines and relationships between music genres are often unclear and/or controversial. Within "the arts", music can be classified as a performing art, a fine art, or an auditory art form.

Music may also involve generative forms in time through the construction of patterns and combinations of natural stimuli, principally sound. Music may be used for artistic or aesthetic, communicative, entertainment, ceremonial or religious purposes and by many composers purely as an academic instrument for study.

The history of music predates the written word and is tied to the development of each unique human culture. The development of music among humans occurred against the backdrop of natural sounds such as birdsong and the sounds other animals use to communicate. Prehistoric music, once more commonly called primitive music, is the name given to all music produced in preliterate cultures (prehistory), beginning somewhere in very late geological history.

The human voice is possibly the oldest musical instrument. A range of paleolithic sites have yielded bones in which lateral holes have been pierced: these are usually considered to be flutes^[1], blown at the end like the Japanese shakuhachi. The earliest written records of musical expression are to be found in the Sama Veda of India and in 4,000 year old cuneiform from Ur. Instruments, such as the seven-holed flute and various types of stringed instruments have been recovered from the Indus valley civilization archaeological sites.^[2] The Indian music is one of the oldest musical traditions in the world, and Indian classical music (marga) can be found from the scriptures of the Hindu tradition, the Vedas. Chinese classical music, the traditional art or court music of China has a history stretching for more than three thousand years. Music was an important part of cultural and social life in Ancient Greece. In ancient Greece, mixed-gender choruses performed for entertainment, celebration and spiritual ceremonies, and musicians and singers had an important role in Greek theater. Music was part of children's basic education in ancient Greece.

Al-Farabi (872-950) wrote a notable book on music titled Kitab al-Musiqa (The Book of Music). He played and invented a varied number of musical instruments and his pure Arabian tone system is still used in Arabic music today.^[3]

While musical life was undoubtedly rich in the early Medieval era, as attested by artistic depictions of instruments, writings about music, and other records, the only repertory of music which has survived from before 800 to the present day is the plainsong liturgical music of the Roman Catholic Church, the largest part of which was called Gregorian chant. Several schools of polyphony flourished in the period after 1100. Alongside these schools of sacred music a vibrant tradition of secular song developed, as exemplified in the music of the troubadours, trouvères and Minnesänger.

Much of the surviving music of the 14th century in European music history is secular. By the middle of the 15th century, composers and singers used a smooth polyphony for sacred musical compositions such as the mass, the motet, and the laude; and secular forms such as the chanson and the madrigal. The invention of printing had an immense influence on the dissemination of musical styles.

The first operas, written around 1600 and the rise of Counterpoint musical compositions define the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque era that lasted until 1750, the year of the death of J.S. Bach, along with Georg Friedrich Handel the most generally known of the Baroque composers (though many composers embraced the Baroque movement in music during those years).

German Baroque composers wrote for small ensembles including strings, brass, and woodwinds, as well as Choirs, pipe organ, harpsichord, and clavichord. During the Baroque period, several major music forms were defined that lasted into later periods when they were expanded and evolved further, including the Fugue, the Invention, the Sonata, and the Concerto.^[4]

The music of the Classical period is characterized by homophonic texture, often featuring prominent melody with accompaniment. These new melodies tended to be almost voice-like and singable. The now popular instrumental music was dominated by further evolution of musical forms initially defined in the Baroque period: the sonata, and the concerto, with the addition of the new form, the symphony. Franz Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, well known even today, are among the central figures of the Classical period.

Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert were transitional composers, leading into the Romantic period, with their expansion of existing genres, forms, and functions of music. In the Romantic period, the emotional and expressive qualities of music came to take precedence over the orientation towards technique and tradition. The late 19th century saw a dramatic expansion in the size of the orchestra, and in the role of concerts as part of urban society. Later Romantic composers created complex and often much longer musical works, merging and expanding traditional forms that had previously been used separately. For example, counterpoint, combined with harmonic structures to create more extended chords with increased use of dissonance and to create dramatic tension and resolution.

The 20th Century saw a revolution in music listening as the radio gained popularity worldwide and new media and technologies were developed to record, capture, reproduce and distribute music. The focus of art music in the 20th was characterized by exploration. Claude Debussy has become well-known and respected for his orientation towards colors and depictions in his compositional style. Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, and John Cage were all deeply influential composers in 20th century art music. Jazz evolved and became a significant genre of music over the course of the 20th century, and during the second half of that century, rock music did the same.

Music is composed and performed for many purposes, ranging from aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, or as an entertainment product for the marketplace. Amateur musicians compose and perform music for their own pleasure, and they do not attempt to derive their income from music. Professional musicians are employed by a range of institutions and organisations, including armed forces, churches and synagogues, symphony orchestras, broadcasting or film production companies, and music schools. As well, professional musicians work as freelancers, seeking contracts and engagements in a variety of settings.

Although amateur musicians differ from professional musicians in that amateur musicians have a non-musical source of income, there are often many links between amateur and professional musicians. Beginning amateur musicians take lessons with professional musicians. In community settings, advanced amateur musicians perform with professional musicians in a variety of ensembles and orchestras. In some rare cases, amateur musicians attain a professional level of competence, and they are able to perform in professional performance settings.

A distinction is often made between music performed for the benefit of a live audience and music that is performed for the purpose of being recorded and distributed through the music retail system or the broadcasting system. However, there are also many cases where a live performance in front of an audience is recorded and distributed (or broadcast).

Performance is the execution of music. While music cannot technically exist without performance, we generally think of performance as being the exhibition of a musical work before an audience. A musical work is performed once its structure and instrumentation are satisfactory to its creators; however, as it gets performed more and more over time, it can evolve and change in any number of ways.

A performance can either be rehearsed or improvised. Improvisation is a musical idea created on the spot (such as a guitar solo or a drum solo), with no prior premeditation, while rehearsal is vigorous repetition of an idea until it has achieved cohesion. Musicians will generally add improvisation to a well-rehearsed idea to create a unique performance. Many cultures include strong traditions of solo and performance, such as in Indian classical music, and in the Western Art music tradition. Other cultures, such as in Bali, include strong traditions of group performance. All cultures include a mixture of both, and performance may range from improvised solo playing for one's enjoyment to highly planned and organised performance rituals such as the modern classical concert, religious processions, music festivals or music competitions.

Chamber music, which is music for a small ensemble with only a few of each type of instrument, is often seen as more intimate than symphonic works. A performer may be referred to as a musician.

Many types of music, such as traditional blues and folk were originally preserved in the memory of performers, and the songs were handed down orally, or aurally ("by ear"). When the composer of music is no longer known, this music is often classified as "traditional". Different musical traditions have different attitudes towards how and where to make changes to the original source material, from quite strict, to those which demand improvisation or modification to the music. History is also passed by ear through song- for example in African societies.

The detail included explicitly in the music notation varies between genres and historical periods. In general, art music notation from the 17th through to the 19th century required performers to have a great deal of contextual knowledge about performing styles.

For example, in the 17th and 18th century, music notated for solo performers typically indicated a simple, unornamented melody. However, it was expected that performers would know how to add stylistically-appropriate ornaments such as trills and turns. In the 19th century, art music for solo performers may give a general instruction such as to perform the music expressively, without describing in detail how the performer should do this. It was expected that the performer would know how to use tempo changes, accentuation, and pauses (among other devices) to obtain this "expressive" performance style. In the 20th century, art music notation often became more explicit, and used a range of markings and annotations to indicate to performers how they should play or sing the piece.

In popular music and jazz, music notation almost always indicates only the basic framework of the melody, harmony, or performance approach; musicians and singers are expected to know the performance conventions and styles associated with specific genres and pieces. For example, the "lead sheet" for a jazz tune may only indicate the melody and the chord changes. The performers in the jazz ensemble are expected to know how to "flesh out" this basic structure by adding ornaments, improvised music, and chordal accompaniment.

Composition is the act of creating music, either on paper or in sound. Most cultures use at least part of the concept of preconceiving musical material, or composition, as held in western classical music. Even when music is notated precisely, there are still many decisions that a performer has to make. The process of a performer deciding how to perform music that has been previously composed and notated is termed interpretation.

Different performers' interpretations of the same music can vary widely. Composers and song writers who present their own music are interpreting, just as much as those who perform the music of others or folk music. The standard body of choices and techniques present at a given time and a given place is referred to as performance practice, where as interpretation is generally used to mean either individual choices of a performer, or an aspect of music which is not clear, and therefore has a "standard" interpretation.

In some musical genres, such as jazz and blues, even more freedom is given to the performer to engage in improvisation on a basic melodic, harmonic, or rhythmic framework. The greatest latitude is given to the performer in a style of performing called free improvisation, which is material that is spontaneously "thought of" (imagined) while being performed, not preconceived. According to the analysis of Georgiana Costescu, improvised music usually follows stylistic or genre conventions and even "fully composed" includes some freely chosen material (see precompositional). Composition does not always mean the use of notation, or the known sole authorship of one individual.

Music can also be determined by describing a "process" which may create musical sounds, examples of this range from wind chimes, through computer programs which select sounds. Music which contains elements selected by chance is called Aleatoric music, and is associated with such composers as John Cage, Morton Feldman, and Witold Lutosławski.

Musical composition is a term that describes the composition of a piece of music. Methods of composition vary widely from one composer to another, however in analysing music all forms -- spontaneous, trained, or untrained -- are built from elements comprising a musical piece. Music can be composed for repeated performance or it can be improvised; composed on the spot. The music can be performed entirely from memory, from a written system of musical notation, or some combination of both. Study of composition has traditionally been dominated by examination of methods and practice of Western classical music, but the definition of composition is broad enough to include spontaneously improvised works like those of free jazz performers and African drummers.

What is important in understanding the composition of a piece is singling out its elements. An understanding of music's formal elements can be helpful in deciphering exactly how a piece is constructed. A universal element of music is how sounds occur in time, which is referred to as the rhythm of a piece of music.

When a piece appears to have a changing time-feel, it is considered to be in rubato time, an Italian expression that indicates that the tempo of the piece changes to suit the expressive intent of the performer. Even random placement of random sounds, which occurs in musical montage, occurs within some kind of time, and thus employs time as a musical element.

Notation is the written expression of music notes and rhythms on paper using symbols. When music is written down, the pitches and rhythm of the music is notated, along with instructions on how to perform the music. This is referred to as musical notation, and the study of how to read notation involves music theory, harmony, the study of performance practice, and in some cases an understanding of historical performance methods.

Musical notation

Written notation varies with style and period of music. In Western Art music, the most common types of written notation are scores, which include all the music parts of an ensemble piece, and parts, which are the music notation for the individual performers or singers. In popular music, jazz, and blues, the standard musical notation is the lead sheet, which notates the melody, chords, lyrics (if it is a vocal piece), and structure of the music. Nonetheless, scores and parts are also used in popular music and jazz, particularly in large ensembles such as jazz "big bands."

In popular music, guitarists and electric bass players often read music notated in tablature, which indicates the location of the notes to be played on the instrument using a diagram of the guitar or bass fingerboard. Tabulature was also used in the Baroque era to notate music for the lute, a stringed, fretted instrument.

Notated music is produced as sheet music for the performers to read from. To perform music from notation requires an understanding of both the musical style and the performance practice that is associated with a piece of music or genre.

The field of music cognition involves the study of many aspects of music including how it is processed by listeners. Rather than accepting the standard practices of analyzing, composing, and performing music as a given, much research in music cognition seeks instead to uncover the mental processes that underlie these practices. Also, research in the field seeks to uncover commonalities between the musical traditions of disparate cultures and possible cognitive "constraints" that limit these musical systems. Questions regarding musical innateness, and emotional responses to music are also major areas of research in the field.

It is important to note that Deaf people can experience music by feeling the vibrations in their body, a process which can be enhanced if the individual holds a resonant, hollow object. A well-known deaf musician is the composer Ludwig van Beethoven, who composed many famous works even after he had completely lost his hearing. Recent examples of deaf musicians include Evelyn Glennie, a highly acclaimed percussionist who has been deaf since the age of twelve, and Chris Buck, a virtuoso violinist who has lost his hearing. This is relevant as it indicates that music is a deeper cognitive process than unexamined phrases such as, "pleasing to the ear" would suggest. Much research in music cognition seeks to uncover these complex mental processes involved in listening to music, which may seem intuitively simple, yet are vastly intricate and complex.

Music is experienced by individuals in a range of social settings ranging from being alone to attending a large concert. Musical performances take different forms in different cultures and socioeconomic milieus. In Europe and North America, there is often a divide between what types of music are viewed as a "high culture" and "low culture." "High culture" types of music typically include Western art music such as Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and modern-era symphonies, concertos, and solo works, and are typically heard in formal concerts in concert halls and churches, with the audience sitting quietly in seats.

On the other hand, other types of music such as jazz, blues, soul, and country are often performed in bars, nightclubs, and theatres, where the audience may be able to drink, dance, and express themselves by cheering. Until the later 20th century, the division between "high" and "low" musical forms was widely accepted as a valid distinction that separated out better quality, more advanced "art music" from the popular styles of music heard in bars and dance halls.

However, in the 1980s and 1990s, musicologists studying this perceived divide between "high" and "low" musical genres argued that this distinction is not based on the musical value or quality of the different types of music.^{[citation needed]} Rather, they argued that this distinction was based largely on the socioeconomic standing or social class of the performers or audience of the different types of music.^{[citation needed]} For example, whereas the audience for Classical symphony concerts typically have above-average incomes, the audience for a hip-hop concert in an inner-city area may have below-average incomes. Even though the performers, audience, or venue where non-"art" music is performed may have a lower socioeconomic status, the music that is performed, such as blues, hip-hop, punk, funk, or ska may be very complex and sophisticated.

When composers introduce styles of music which break with convention, there can be a strong resistance from academic music experts and popular culture. Late-period Beethoven string quartets, Stravinsky ballet scores, serialism, bebop-era jazz, hip hop, punk rock, and electronica have all been considered non-music by some critics when they were first introduced.^{[citation needed]}

The music that composers make can be heard through several media; the most traditional way is to hear it live, in the presence, or as one of the musicians. Live music can also be broadcast over the radio, television or the internet. Some musical styles focus on producing a sound for a performance, while others focus on producing a recording which mixes together sounds which were never played "live". Recording, even of styles which are essentially live, often uses the ability to edit and splice to produce recordings which are considered better than the actual performance.

As talking pictures emerged in the early 20th century, with their prerecorded musical tracks, an increasing number of moviehouse orchestra musicians found themselves out of work.^[5] During the 1920s live musical performances by orchestras, pianists, and theater organists were common at first-run theaters^[6] With the coming of the talking motion pictures, those featured performances were largely eliminated. The American Federation of Musicians took out newspaper advertisements protesting the replacement of live musicians with mechanical playing devices. One 1929 ad that appeared in the Pittsburgh Press features an image of a can labeled "Canned Music / Big Noise Brand / Guaranteed to Produce No Intellectual or Emotional Reaction Whatever" ^[7]

Since legislation introduced to help protect performers, composers, publishers and producers, including the Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 in the United States, and the 1979 revised Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works in the United Kingdom, recordings and live performances have also become more accessible through computers, devices and internet in a form that is commonly known as music-on-demand.

In many cultures, there is less distinction between performing and listening to music, as virtually everyone is involved in some sort of musical activity, often communal. In industrialised countries, listening to music through a recorded form, such as sound recording or watching a music video, became more common than experiencing live performance, roughly in the middle of the 20th century.

Sometimes, live performances incorporate prerecorded sounds. For example, a DJ uses disc records for scratching, and some 20th-century works have a solo for an instrument or voice that is performed along with music that is prerecorded onto a tape. Computers and many keyboards can be programmed to produce and play MIDI music. Audiences can also become performers by participating in Karaoke, an activity of Japanese origin which centres around a device that plays voice-eliminated versions of well-known songs. Most karaoke machines also have video screens that show lyrics to songs being performed; performers can follow the lyrics as they sing over the instrumental tracks.

It consists of record companies, labels and publishers that distribute recorded music products internationally and that often control the rights to those products. Some music labels are "independent," while others are subsidiaries of larger corporate entities or international media groups.

The incorporation of music training from preschool to post secondary education is common in North America and Europe, because involvement in music is thought to teach basic skills such as concentration, counting, listening, and cooperation while also promoting understanding of language, improving the ability to recall information, and creating an environment more conducive to learning in other areas. ^[8] In elementary schools, children often learn to play instruments such as the recorder, sing in small choirs, and learn about the history of Western art music. In secondary schools students may have the opportunity to perform some type of musical ensembles, such as choirs, marching bands, concert bands, jazz bands, or orchestras, and in some school systems, music classes may be available. Some students also take private music lessons with a teacher. Amateur musicians typically take lessons to learn musical rudiments and beginner- to intermediate-level musical techniques.

At the university level, students in most arts and humanities programs can receive credit for taking music courses, which typically take the form of an overview course on the history of music, or a music appreciation course that focuses on listening to music and learning about different musical styles. In addition, most North American and European universities have some type of musical ensembles that non-music students are able to participate in, such as choirs, marching bands, or orchestras. The study of Western art music is increasingly common outside of North America and Europe, such as STSI in Bali, or the Classical music programs that are available in Asian countries such as South Korea, Japan, and China. At the same time, Western universities and colleges are widening their curriculum to include music of non-Western cultures, such as the music of Africa or Bali (e.g. Gamelan music).

Musicology is the study of the subject of music. The earliest definitions defined three sub-disciplines: systematic musicology, historical musicology, and comparative musicology. In contemporary scholarship, one is more likely to encounter a division of the discipline into music theory, music history, and ethnomusicology. Research in musicology has often been enriched by cross-disciplinary work, for example in the field of psychoacoustics. The study of music of non-western cultures, and the cultural study of music, is called ethnomusicology.

Graduates of undergraduate music programs can go on to further study in music graduate programs. Graduate degrees include the Master of Music, the Master of Arts, the PhD (e.g., in musicology or music theory), and more recently, the Doctor of Musical Arts, or DMA. The Master of Music degree, which takes one to two years to complete, is typically awarded to students studying the performance of an instrument, education, voice or composition. The Master of Arts degree, which takes one to two years to complete and often requires a thesis, is typically awarded to students studying musicology, music history, or music theory. Undergraduate university degrees in music, including the Bachelor of Music, the Bachelor of Music Education, and the Bachelor of Arts (with a major in music) typically take three to five years to complete. These degrees provide students with a grounding in music theory and music history, and many students also study an instrument or learn singing technique as part of their program.

The PhD, which is required for students who want to work as university professors in musicology, music history, or music theory, takes three to five years of study after the Master's degree, during which time the student will complete advanced courses and undertake research for a dissertation. The Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) is a relatively new degree that was created to provide a credential for professional performers or composers that want to work as university professors in musical performance or composition. The DMA takes three to five years after a Master's degree, and includes advanced courses, projects, and performances. In Medieval times, the study of music was one of the Quadrivium of the seven Liberal Arts and considered vital to higher learning. Within the quantitative Quadrivium, music, or more accurately harmonics, was the study of rational proportions.

Zoomusicology is the study of the music of non-human animals, or the musical aspects of sounds produced by non-human animals. As George Herzog (1941) asked, "do animals have music?" François-Bernard Mâche's Musique, mythe, nature, ou les Dauphins d'Arion (1983), a study of "ornitho-musicology" using a technique of Ruwet's Language, musique, poésie (1972) paradigmatic segmentation analysis, shows that bird songs are organised according to a repetition-transformation principle. Jean-Jacques Nattiez (1990), argues that "in the last analysis, it is a human being who decides what is and is not musical, even when the sound is not of human origin. If we acknowledge that sound is not organised and conceptualised (that is, made to form music) merely by its producer, but by the mind that perceives it, then music is uniquely human."

Music theory is the study of music, generally in a highly technical manner outside of other disciplines. More broadly it refers to any study of music, usually related in some form with compositional concerns, and may include mathematics, physics, and anthropology. What is most commonly taught in beginning music theory classes are guidelines to write in the style of the common practice period, or tonal music. Theory, even that which studies music of the common practice period, may take many other forms. Musical set theory is the application of mathematical set theory to music, first applied to atonal music. Speculative music theory, contrasted with analytic music theory, is devoted to the analysis and synthesis of music materials, for example tuning systems, generally as preparation for composition.

In the West, much of the history of music that is taught deals with the Western civilization's art music. The history of music in other cultures ("world music" or the field of "ethnomusicology") is also taught in Western universities. This includes the documented classical traditions of Asian countries outside the influence of Western Europe, as well as the folk or indigenous music of various other cultures.

Popular styles of music varied widely from culture to culture, and from period to period. Different cultures emphasised different instruments, or techniques, or uses for music. Music has been used not only for entertainment, for ceremonies, and for practical and artistic communication, but also for propaganda in totalitarian countries.

There is a host of music classifications, many of which are caught up in the argument over the definition of music. Among the largest of these is the division between classical music (or "art" music), and popular music (or commercial music - including rock and roll, country music, and pop music). Some genres don't fit neatly into one of these "big two" classifications, (such as folk music, world music, or jazz music).

As world cultures have come into greater contact, their indigenous musical styles have often merged into new styles. For example, the United States bluegrass style contains elements from Anglo-Irish, Scottish, Irish, German and African instrumental and vocal traditions, which were able to fuse in the United States' multi-ethnic society. Genres of music are determined as much by tradition and presentation as by the actual music. While most classical music is acoustic and meant to be performed by individuals or groups, many works described as "classical" include samples or tape, or are mechanical.^{[original research?]} Some works, like Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, are claimed by both jazz and classical music. Many current music festivals celebrate a particular musical genre.

Indian music, for example, is one of the oldest and longest living types of music, and is still widely heard and performed in South Asia, as well as internationally (especially since the 1960s). Indian music has mainly 3 forms of Classical music, Hindustani, Carnatic, and Dhrupad styles. It has also a large repertoire of styles, which involve only Percussion music such as the Tala-vadya performances famous in South India.

Robert Burton wrote in the 17th century in his work, The Anatomy of Melancholy, that music and dance were critical in treating mental illness, especially melancholia.^[9] He said that "But to leave all declamatory speeches in praise of divine music, I will confine myself to my proper subject: besides that excellent power it hath to expel many other diseases, it is a sovereign remedy against despair and melancholy, and will drive away the devil himself." Burton noted that "...Canus, a Rhodian fiddler, in Philostratus, when Apollonius was inquisitive to know what he could do with his pipe, told him, "That he would make a melancholy man merry, and him that was merry much merrier than before, a lover more enamoured, a religious man more devout."^[10]^[11]^[12]

In November 2006, Dr. Michael J. Crawford^[13] and his colleagues also found that music therapy helped schizophrenic patients.^[14] In the Ottoman Empire, mental illnesses were treated with music.
